Kitchen Island Design: 5 Custom Ideas | Sean's Cabinetry

The kitchen island has become the heart of the modern home. It's where morning coffee gets poured, homework gets finished, and friends linger long after dinner is served. But a great kitchen island design does more than fill the middle of the room. It solves problems, adds storage, creates a place to gather, and sets the tone for the entire kitchen.

Before choosing finishes or countertops, it helps to think about what you want your island to do. Some homeowners need a hardworking cooking station with a cooktop, ovens, and deep drawers for pots and pans. Others want a spacious spot for family meals and entertaining. Some see the island as a showpiece, a place to display pottery and cookbooks or bring in a natural element like a live edge slab. With custom cabinetry, you don't have to pick just one goal. The right design can balance seating, storage, and style in a single piece built around how you live.

In this article, we're sharing five custom islands from recent Sean's Cabinetry projects across Minnesota, each designed with a different purpose in mind. You'll see a walnut island with a built-in cooktop, a gathering-focused island with smart drawer storage, a one-of-a-kind piece inspired by an antique baker's table, a moody walnut workhorse with two ovens, and a live edge bar top that brings the outdoors in. Whether you're planning a remodel or just collecting ideas, these kitchens show how much a thoughtful kitchen island design can do.

Cooktop on Kitchen Island with Seating and Storage

Most homeowners hear they have to choose between seating and a cooktop on kitchen island space. For this Hopkins, MN remodel with construction2style, the clients got both. The island holds a 36-inch JennAir RISE range, flanked by deep drawer stacks for pans and utensils, with room for upholstered stools on the end. The cook faces the room, stays in the conversation, and everything they need is within reach.

The cabinetry is natural walnut with frameless construction and slab doors, a clean pairing that let the grain become the star of this kitchen island design. Frameless boxes also mean wider drawer openings and more usable storage inside. Matte black pulls keep the look simple and nod to the mid century modern mood board.

Topping it all is Cambria Mammoth Cave in a matte finish, a raven-black quartz with fine white veining that grounds the warm walnut. Heritage brass Gigi pendants with black shades hang above, bringing in the gold and black fixture combination and textured finishes that define this space.

Kitchen Island Design Built for Gathering

In this Rogers, MN kitchen, the island was designed first and foremost to bring people together. This kitchen island design dedicates one full side to a spacious seating area, with room for four stools and an uninterrupted countertop for serving, homework, or morning coffee. There's no sink to break up the surface, just open space to gather.

The working side of the island is just as thoughtful. A built-in microwave keeps the countertops clear, and a full bank of deep drawers holds everyday cookware. Each drawer organizer for pots and pans keeps lids, skillets, and stockpots sorted and easy to grab, right across from the range. The countertop is Cambria Delgatie, a soft white quartz with gentle white-on-white movement and warm cross veining that lets the wood island base shine.

The perimeter cabinetry is another example of frameless construction, painted in Sherwin-Williams Snowbound SW 7004, a versatile white with a slight gray undertone. Frameless boxes give this kitchen clean, full-overlay lines and easy access to every inch of storage. Two iron lantern pendants in brass hang above the island, and brass pulls tie the cabinetry back to the lighting for a bright, cohesive space.

Custom Kitchen Island Design Inspired by an Antique Baker's Table

This custom kitchen island design looks different depending on who's standing in front of it. To some, it's an Art Deco-inspired piece, with rounded corners and sleek lines borrowed from Streamline Moderne, the late-1930s evolution of Art Deco. To others, it recalls the open storage found in rural French kitchens, where an antique baker's table holds pottery, bowls, and cookbooks in plain sight. Practical and a little rustic, yet polished and fully finished, it manages to be both at once.

Finished in natural walnut with a warm tan stain, the island stands out against the frameless kitchen cabinets painted in Sherwin-Williams Fawn Brindle that wrap this U-shaped kitchen. The open shelving invites you to display what you love instead of hiding it away. When every piece is chosen with care, it reads as curated rather than cluttered and brings the collected warmth of an antique kitchen. On the working side, the island switches to traditional design, with recessed panel drawers, a built-in microwave, and brass pulls that keep cookware and everyday essentials within reach of the range.

Burl wood counter stools with arched legs and cognac velvet cushions echo the island's Art Deco curves and complete the collected look. If you love Art Deco style but don't want a large, bulky island taking over your kitchen, a baker's table concept might be the right fit. Open shelving and curved corners keep the island feeling light, while drawers and appliances on the working side keep it fully functional.

Moody Kitchen Island Design in Natural Walnut

This kitchen, designed in collaboration with construction2style, is large, dark, and full of character. Natural walnut cabinetry wraps the entire space, from the island to the paneled refrigerator wall, giving the room a warm, enveloping feel. The island is built for serious cooking, with a wall oven, a microwave drawer, and a second oven in the range across the way. Stacks of deep drawers surround the appliances, and each drawer organizer for pots and pans keeps heavy cookware within easy reach of both ovens.

On the other side, the island opens up to seating, with a walnut ledge detail running beneath the countertop overhang. It's a kitchen island design that proves a hardworking island can still be a comfortable place to gather. The countertop is Cambria Charlestown, a dramatic charcoal gray quartz with meandering gray and white veining. It carries up the wall as a full backsplash behind the range, capped with a slim open shelf for pottery and everyday pieces.

Framing the black range hood are two Neena Pendants, designed by Atlason Studio in collaboration with Minneapolis glass studio Hennepin Made. Each fluid glass shade is hand blown, and their slender shape adds a sculptural touch without competing with the rich walnut and dark stone.

Kitchen Island Design with a Live Edge Bar Top

This Tonka Bay, MN kitchen, built in collaboration with Aspect Design Build, shows how a single natural element can define a kitchen island design. A live edge wood slab wraps the seating side of the island, its organic shape and rich grain sitting just above a veined stone countertop. The raised wood bar gives guests a warm, casual place to gather, while the stone surface below stays clear for prep and cleanup.

Unlike the islands above, this one includes a prep sink, turning it into a true workstation that faces the rest of the room. Open shelving on the end holds cookbooks and serving pieces, adding display space without interrupting the clean lines of the painted cabinetry. Black and brass multi-arm pendants hang overhead, tying into the black faucet and brass hardware throughout the kitchen.

The cabinetry pairs crisp paint grade finishes with rustic maple. White painted cabinets on the island and perimeter run floor to ceiling around the range, while rustic maple lower cabinets and bar cabinetry bring warmth and texture that echo the wood-paneled walls. The contrast between the painted island, the live edge bar, and the rustic maple proves that mixing materials can make a kitchen feel both polished and grounded.
